A Decade of Hydrological Drought in Central-Western Argentina

Most of the water used for development main socio-economic activities in Central-Western Argentina (CWA), an arid to semi-arid region, home most Argentinean wine production, relies on surface streamflow from several snow-fed rivers. During last decade (2010-2020), reduced snow accumulation over higher elevations Andes mountains triggered occurrence hydrological drought CWA, affecting winter tourism, restricting use irrigation and domestic use, leading socio-political disputes. This study provides a detailed description recent conditions through records 15 river basins, which were complemented by precipitation, snowpack, equivalent thickness measurements provide comprehensive picture losses decade. Hydrological indices derived threshold level method standardized index allowed characterizing unusualness this dry period context 49 years. The deficit highlighted challenges faced managers agricultural oases, with likely overexploitation groundwater resources supplement limited runoff. severity increased since 2017, record-breaking levels particularly during between July 2019 June 2020 rivers located 35° 36°S.
